Aussie Open 2012, what will you unveil?

On the eve of the Australian Open there’s always a sense of excitement and anticipation inside me waiting to erupt. First Grand Slam of the tennis year, in Melbourne, my home city and as always I hope the rain stays away and the ATP and WTA players come to play.

There has already been some withdrawals, there’s players with existing injury concerns, (lets hope that player injuries do not play a significant part in this years Open), there will be some heart breaks, lets not forget the intense drama, and there’s bound to be a new star in the making, putting on a show. That’s probably one of my favourite elements of any Grand Slam event. A chance for a qualifier or a lesser known, lower ranked player to battle it out, show the world what they’re made of. A chance to match it with the higher ranked players and even surpass them and make a name for themselves, but more importantly make a significant start to their tennis career.

I always get very excited pre-Grand Slam, I’d like to hear what you are excited about this year; what you’d hope to see, what you could do without and what you’d be shocked to see. So drop me a line and lets talk tennis.

 I hope to see:
– flamboyant natural new talent making us stop and take notice

– epic 5 setters

– players coming to net when they should (to prevent me from yelling “come to net”)

– Clijsters and Sharapova deep into the second week

– excitement injected back into women’s tennis

I could do without:

– the kings and queens of play it safe tennis

– Feds in the final (sorry to all the Federer fans)

– Murray grabbing his back, leg, ankle or shoulder after a bad shot selection or unforced error

– Sharapova’s loud grunts (and hearing others complain about it)

– players displaying bad sportsmanship (particularly in press conferences)

 I’d be shocked to see:

– all seeds getting through unscathed

– an all Aussie final

Potential match-ups to look forward to:

– Tomic V Feds

– Murray V Monfils

– Nishikori V Tsonga

– Stosur V Kvitova

– Sharapova V Williams

– Clijsters V Li Na

What we can expect to see:

– some unexpected wins

– new champions being born

– silky skills on display

– passion, sweat, tears, elation and pure bliss

The players have arrived, the tourists have arrived, Melbourne is buzzing. The wait is over. Tomorrow the first Grand Slam of the year will begin.

Play time!
